nitrogen,hydrogen and carbon during heating for Titanium Forgings.This is most effectively done by coating the forging slugs in a liquid glaze or glass which is allowed to dry before heating for forging. The coating fuses at between 500 and 600°C forming a viscous surface which protects the material from contamination. The proprietary liquid glass coatings have lubricating properties which assist metal flow during forging. Some forgers have found that the addition of a liquid based graphite to the die surface further improves die life and metal flow.

Grade 5 titanium is the aerospace grade and is not cold formable, so it is used more often when no forming is needed. Grade 5 aerospace alloy will have ultimate tensile strength at and above 120,000 psi.
Plate is often used with the goal to get really close to the final dimensions of the part being made. The material is worked to the closest size of the desired part and the grain structure of the finished piece is more homogenous. Titanium sheet is often used as a heat barrier because titanium stops the heat and does not transfer to the rest of the assembly. Titanium Grade 1 is an unalloyed, low strength titanium product containing low oxygen with high formability; this titanium grade is used in airframes, heat exchangers and desalination units.

Grade 2 titanium is an unalloyed, medium strength titanium product. This titanium grade is used in airframes, aircraft engines, and marine parts; good weldability and corrosion resistance are its distinguishing characteristics.

Titanium Grade 3 is an unalloyed, high strength, titanium product providing excellent corrosion resistance and good weldability. This titanium grade is primarily used in airframe and aircraft engine parts.
